Current Initiatives

Young Adults
Smoking has been declining for decades in every age group except among 18- to 24-year-olds, the fastest growing group of new smokers. With a grant from the Virginia Department of Health, Prevention Connections is beginning work on a large- scale effort to encourage Virginia college students to quit smoking through policy and cessation initiatives.

Children and Youth
Unfortunately, underage teens are still using tobacco too. More than 9,700 minors begin smoking each year in Virginia. It’s critical to continue educating these youths about ways to prevent tobacco use and to quit. Prevention Connections is partnering with youth agencies such as the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation to increase statewide efforts to help Virginia’s kids make healthier life choices and avoid tobacco use.
