About the Conference

In the last three decades, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the United States. One out of three children is now obese or overweight. Here in Virginia, where more than 60 percent of the adult population is also obese or overweight, it’s much the same story.

Virginia First Lady Maureen McDonnell, the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth and Prevention Connections invite you to attend this exciting statewide conference where you can learn more about the scope of childhood obesity in Virginia and what’s being done about it here and across the nation.

Inspired by the CDC’s Weight of the Nation conference, held in July, 2009, in Washington, D.C., Virginia’s inaugural Weight of the State conference will aid us in forging new state and regional partnerships and collaborations and set an agenda for what our next steps are in combating this public health epidemic in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

This conference will present the most current data and statistics on childhood obesity in the Commonwealth. Presenters will discuss approaches being used in other states and localities, and participants will learn the latest prevention strategies, including: school nutrition programs; innovative physical fitness initiatives; pediatric health care approaches; and delivering prevention messages to young people via social marketing techniques like those employed by successful advertising agencies and corporations.

If you are a public health professional, educator, community leader, policy maker or health care professional, you need to be a part of this unprecedented statewide summit. Together we will turn back the tide.
