Crestview Elementary, Henrico County
More than 350 children from Henrico County's Crestview Elementary School celebrated International Walk to School Day on Oct. 5, 2011. First Lady of Virginia Maureen McDonnell and other state and local dignitaries walked along with the children. It was one of 40 such events statewide that day.

Bethel Manor Elementary, Langley Air Force Base
Hosted an event to kick-off the Walkers and Bikers Club. The Club encourages students to walk or ride to and from school. Each student’s distance is recorded daily and students receive incentives to reward progress. The program successfully increased the number of students walking and biking from 45 to 180.

Patrick Henry Elementary, Martinsville
Over 500 students participated in the 2011 Raindrop Challenge, a school-wide run/walk event. The event was held at the J. Frank Wilson Park, which is adjacent to the school. Students got involved by submitting designs for the event t-shirt and voting on their favorite.

McHarg Elementary, Radford
Sixty students participated in a Spring Walk to School Day to coincide with the Earth Day Celebration. The school also partnered with local law enforcement to provide bicycle safety training and held a bike rodeo, where they outfitted students with free helmets.

Weems Elementary, Manassas
Students and their parents participated in a Family Fitness Night to promote the 9-5-2-1-0 wellness message. Participants enjoyed several activity stations, went on a Safety Walk and learned the keys to staying safe while walking to school, watched a bike safety demonstration and received free helmets.
